St Helens Resident celebrates 90th Birthday!

Celebrating any birthday during the pandemic has been difficult but staff at Eccleston Court Care Home in St Helens wanted to make sure resident Margaret Rimmer had a special day as she recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Margaret Rimmer grew up in Kiln Lane, Eccleston, surrounded by close cousins in a happy childhood home. She left Rivington Road School aged 14 and started work in the wages department of Pilkingtons, in the Bridge Street office.

Margaret later married, aged 18, at St Helens Parish Church, on Friday 7th April in 1950 to Leonard Rimmer, a “very handsome army officer who served in India, and later became a headteacher.” The couple were blessed with two daughters, Andrea in 1951 and Jane in 1962 (who sadly passed away in 2000.)

Margaret was a very active member of her church, becoming a church leader, working in the Sunday School, the Mother’s Union, Ladies meetings and speaking at many important events. Margaret was also Deputy organiser of voluntary services at Rainhill hospital.  She was well known for her hard work and would not slow down until she had to through ill-health.

Margaret remains very close to her granddaughter Lauren and her beloved daughter Andrea so, as restrictions have eased slightly allowing visitors within care homes, it was lovely that they could visit and help celebrate her ‘special day’. The team at the home joined in the celebrations with a special birthday cake to mark the occasion.

John Craig, Manager at Eccleston Court said.
“It was lovely to be able to celebrate Margaret’s 90th Birthday with her.” He continued “Celebrating birthdays and special events over the last year has been great for the morale of staff, residents, and their families”
